DCI Editor In Chief Mark Drapeau in Fortune: America needs a new bargain on data centers

Data Catalyst Institute Editor In Chief Mark Drapeau has written a commentary for Fortune on the public backlash against AI data centers, which has become an issue in this year’s midterm races.

Drapeau argues that the industry’s problem is not a communications problem. Communities are being asked to absorb higher electricity bills, water demands and infrastructure costs while companies capture most of the benefits. He proposes a “Capacity Expansion Bargain.” Under it, companies would pay the costs their projects create, add new power to the grid, and publish verified data on energy and water use. In return, states would honor the tax and permitting terms they promised and give qualifying projects a fast, predictable review.
